La educación en Cuba antes de 1959
EDUCATION IN CUBA BEFORE 1959.
In 1953 Cuba with a population of 5,829,029 was ranked 4th in Latin America with 76% literacy rate. In 2000, Cuba was ranked 2nd with 96%. The total number of Cuban students enrolled in primary education in 1953 was 669,610, a number higher than Switzerland with 557,406 of primary school enrolment in 1956. UN Statistical Yearbook, 1958, p. 549 & 559.
Social agendas are never an excuse for dictatorship. Going up 2% in literacy rates when compared with other Latin American nations over a period of more than 4 decades is no excuse to cancel individual liberties and persecute hundreds of thousands of Cubans for thinking different. Cuba would have pursued the same reformist path without engaging in gross human rights violations and establishing the longest lasting and most brutal dictatorship in Latin American history.
