Michael Lima, Director of Democratic Spaces working with activists in Cuba shares his views on the campaign for abstention in Cuba, interviewed in Cuba Proxima on March 22, 2023.

The Cuban people must choose the political system they want.

By abstaining, the Cuban people will send a loud and clear message to the international community that there are no free and pluralistic elections in Cuba.

I support abstention in the voting this March 26, as a form of citizen protest against a dictatorship that has denied several generations of Cubans the right to participate in free, plural, fair and multi-party elections. The Cuban people must choose the political system they want.

By abstaining, the Cuban people will send a loud and clear message to the international community that free and pluralistic elections do not exist in Cuba.

When Cubans vote, they do not vote for candidates who represent different currents of thought and political tendencies, but for candidates who all invariably support the prevailing system. No more.
