Protests in various neighbourhoods and municipalities in Havana broke out on September 29. 2022. The areas reported are Cerro Arroyo Naranjo and San Miguel del Padrón. The immediate trigger of the protests was the nation wide power outage announced on September 27 following the passage of Hurricane Ian.

Protesters however chanted freedom as they understand that a regime change towards democracy is the only way out of the humanitarian catastrophe in Cuba. Since 2020, the people of Cuba with the so called reordering of the economy has endured extreme scarcities and the worst inflation in decades.

Instad of listening to the demands of the people of Cuba, the regime deployed repressive forces to crackdown protests and shut down internet as of September 29 at around 8 pm when Netblocks reported a near collapse of Internet traffic in Cuba. Since November 27, 2020 when the first major protest took place in front of the Ministry of Culture, protests have occurred every month for the past two years including the protests of July 11. 2021, the largest in the. nation’s recent history.

The regime has responded by imprisoning over 1,000 people turning the country into the biggest jailer of political prisoners in Latin America. Fleeing from repression and misery, Cubans have fled the country in what has been considered the biggest exodus since 1959.

In Canada we stand with the right of the people of Cuba to decide their system of governance in free, fair and multiparty elections and called on the government, parliament and civil society to sanction the enablers of repression to stand by the people of Cuba in their struggle for democracy.

Senator Leo Housakos stands in support of the people of Cuba in their demand for freedom while condemning repression stemming from socialism and authoritarianism in Cuba.
