ARTIST LUIS MANUEL OTERO ARRESTED DURING THE REVOLUCION DE LOS GIRASOLES
Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara is a young Cuban artist who conveyed in a vide his intention to peacefully join the protests in solidarity with the Sunflower Revolution taking place across Cuba on September 8.
As he shows in this video, in Cuba a young person is arrested for simply sitting in a bucket in the street in front of his home displaying a placard that says “Sunflower March.”
This arbitrary arrest constitutes a gross human rights violation of the following articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
Article 9: “No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.”
Article 18: “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”
Article 19: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
Article 20: “(1) Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
(2) No one may be compelled to belong to an association.”
