Speech by the President of Ukraine to the Parliament of Canada

On March 15, 2022 the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave a historic and powerful speech to the Parliament of Canada clearly reiterating his request once again for support with a ‘No Fly Zone’ over Ukraine. He asked Canadians to think how it would be like if bombs would destroy infrastructure, and kill civilians and children in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa. How would Canadians feel if the iconic CN Tower in Toronto were destroyed by bombs from an invasion ordered by a tyrant?

Zelenskyy’s speech received a 3 minute applause standing ovation from the Parliament.

Democratic Spaces stands with the people of Ukraine and Ukranian Canadians in this struggle for the sovereignty of their nation and more broadly for freedom and democracy around the world. If the free world allows a despot, a tyranny like Putin to invade Ukraine and impose a puppet regime by force, what is to expect next? The invasion of Moldovia and Poland?

As authoritarianism expands around the world, we have a moral duty to help the people of Ukraine fight for their nation and for their democratic system. An attack from dictatorship such as Russia on their democratic system in Ukraine will easily turn into an attack against any democratic system anywhere around the world.

Thank you very much. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Speaker, prime minister, dear Justin, members of the government, members of the Parliament, all distinguished guests, friends: before I begin, I would like you to understand my feelings, and feelings of all Ukrainians as far as it is possible.

Muchas gracias. Señoras y señores, señor presidente, primer ministro, querido Justin, miembros del gobierno, miembros del Parlamento, todos los distinguidos invitados, amigos: antes de empezar, me gustaría que entendieran mis sentimientos, y los sentimientos de todos los ucranianos en la medida de lo posible.

Our feelings over the last 20 days; 20 days of a full-scale aggression of Russian Federation after eight years of fighting in Donbas region. Can you only imagine?

Nuestros sentimientos durante los últimos 20 días; 20 días de una agresión a gran escala de la Federación Rusa después de ocho años de lucha en la región de Donbas. ¿Pueden imaginarse?

Imagine that at 4 a.m., each of you start hearing bomb explosions. Severe explosions. Justin, can you imagine hearing it? You, your children hear all these severe explosions: bombing of airport, bombing of Ottawa airport, tens of other cities of your wonderful country. Can you imagine that?

Imaginen que a las 4 de la mañana, cada uno de ustedes empieza a escuchar explosiones de bombas. Explosiones graves. Justin, ¿te imaginas oírlo? Tú, tus hijos, oís todas estas graves explosiones: bombardeo del aeropuerto, bombardeo del aeropuerto de Ottawa, decenas de otras ciudades de vuestro maravilloso país. ¿Te imaginas eso?

Cruise missiles falling down, and your children asking you, ‘What happened?’ And you’re receiving the first news which infrastructure objects have been bombed and destroyed by Russian Federation, and you know how many people already died.

Misiles de crucero cayendo, y tus hijos preguntándote: "¿Qué ha pasado? Y recibes las primeras noticias de qué objetos de infraestructura han sido bombardeados y destruidos por la Federación Rusa, y sabes cuántas personas han muerto ya.

Can you only imagine? What words, how can you explain to your children full-scale aggression just happened in your country? You know that this is war to annihilate your state, your country. You know that this is the war to subjugate your people.

¿Te lo puedes imaginar? ¿Qué palabras, cómo puedes explicar a tus hijos la agresión a gran escala que acaba de ocurrir en tu país? Ustedes saben que esta es la guerra para aniquilar su estado, su país. Sabes que es una guerra para subyugar a tu pueblo.

And on the second day, you receive notifications that huge columns of military equipment are entering your country. Crossing the border, they’re entering small cities. They are giving siege, encircling cities and they start to shell civil neighbourhoods.

Y al segundo día, recibes notificaciones de que enormes columnas de equipo militar están entrando en tu país. Cruzando la frontera, están entrando en pequeñas ciudades. Están asediando, rodeando las ciudades y empiezan a bombardear los barrios civiles.

They bomb school buildings. They destroy kindergartens. Like in our city: city of Sumy, like in city of Okhtyrka. Imagine that someone is laying siege to Vancouver. Can you just imagine for a second?

Bombardean edificios escolares. Destruyen jardines de infantes. Como en nuestra ciudad: la ciudad de Sumy, como en la ciudad de Okhtyrka. Imagina que alguien está asediando Vancouver. ¿Puedes imaginarlo por un segundo?

And all these people who are left in such cities, this is exactly the situation that the city of Mariupol is suffering right now. And they’re left without heat or hydro, without means of communicating, almost without food, without water, seeking shelter in the bomb shelters.

Y toda esta gente que se queda en esas ciudades, esta es exactamente la situación que está sufriendo ahora mismo la ciudad de Mariupol. Y se quedan sin calefacción ni agua, sin medios de comunicación, casi sin comida, sin agua, buscando refugio en los refugios antibombas.

Dear Justin, dear guests: can you imagine that every day you see memorandums about the number of casualties, including among women and children? You heard about the bombings: currently, we have 97 children that died during this war.

Querido Justin, queridos invitados: ¿os imagináis que cada día veis memorandos sobre el número de víctimas, incluso entre las mujeres y los niños? Habéis oído hablar de los bombardeos: actualmente, tenemos 97 niños que han muerto durante esta guerra.

Can you imagine the famous CN Tower in Toronto, if it was hit by Russian bombs? Of course, I don’t wish this on anyone but this is our reality in which we live. We have to contemplate, we have to see where the next bombing will take place. We have a freedom square in the city of Kharkiv, our (unclear), the place where victims of Holocaust have been buried, and today it was bombed by Russians.

¿Se imaginan la famosa Torre CN de Toronto, si fuera alcanzada por bombas rusas? Por supuesto, no se lo deseo a nadie, pero esta es la realidad en la que vivimos. Tenemos que contemplar, tenemos que ver dónde tendrá lugar el próximo bombardeo. Tenemos una plaza de la libertad en la ciudad de Kharkiv, nuestro (poco claro), el lugar donde han sido enterradas las víctimas del Holocausto, y hoy ha sido bombardeada por los rusos.

Imagine that Canadian facilities have been bombed similarly as our buildings and our memorial places are being bombed. A number of families have died. Every night is a horrible night.

Imagínense que las instalaciones canadienses han sido bombardeadas de forma similar a nuestros edificios y nuestros lugares conmemorativos. Varias familias han muerto. Cada noche es una noche horrible.

Russians are shelling from all kinds of artillery, from tanks. They’re hitting civilian infrastructure. They’re hitting big buildings. Can you imagine there is a fire starting at a nuclear power plant? That’s exactly what happened in our country. Each city that they’re marching through, they’re taking down Ukrainian flags. Can you imagine someone taking down your Canadian flags in Montreal and other Canadian cities?

Los rusos están bombardeando desde todo tipo de artillería, desde tanques. Están golpeando la infraestructura civil. Están golpeando grandes edificios. ¿Se imaginan que se produzca un incendio en una central nuclear? Eso es exactamente lo que ocurrió en nuestro país. En cada ciudad por la que marchan, quitan las banderas ucranianas. ¿Te imaginas que alguien quitara las banderas canadienses en Montreal y otras ciudades canadienses?

I know that you all support Ukraine and (unclear) friends with you, Justin, but also I would like you to understand, and I would like you to feel this: what we feel every day.

Sé que todos ustedes apoyan a Ucrania y a los amigos (poco claros) que están con ustedes, Justin, pero también me gustaría que entendieran, y me gustaría que sintieran esto: lo que sentimos todos los días.

We want to be victorious. We want to prevail for the sake of life.

Queremos salir victoriosos. Queremos prevalecer por el bien de la vida.

Can you imagine when you call your friends, your friendly nation, and you ask:  ‘Please close the sky, close the airspace, please stop the bombing. How many more cruise missiles have to fall on our cities until you make this happen?’

¿Se imaginan cuando llaman a sus amigos, a su nación amiga, y piden: 'Por favor, cierren el cielo, cierren el espacio aéreo, por favor, detengan los bombardeos'? ¿Cuántos misiles de crucero más tienen que caer sobre nuestras ciudades hasta que lo hagáis?".

And they, in return, they express their deep concerns about the situation.

Y ellos, de su parte,, expresan su profunda preocupación por la situación.

When we talk with our partners, they say, ‘Please hold on, hold on a little longer.’

Cuando hablamos con nuestros socios, nos dicen: 'Por favor, esperen, esperen un poco más'.

Some people are talking about trying to avoid the escalation and at the same time, in response to our aspiration to become members of NATO, we also do not hear a clear answer.

Algunos hablan de intentar evitar la escalada y, al mismo tiempo, en respuesta a nuestra aspiración de convertirnos en miembros de la OTAN, tampoco escuchamos una respuesta clara.

Sometimes we don’t see obvious things. It’s dire straits, but it’s also allowed us to see who our real friends are over the last 20 days and as well, eight previous years.

A veces no vemos cosas obvias. Es una situación desesperada, pero también nos ha permitido ver quiénes son nuestros verdaderos amigos en los últimos 20 días y también en los ocho años anteriores.

I am sure that you’ve been able to see clearly what’s going on and I am addressing all of you.

Estoy seguro de que han podido ver claramente lo que está pasando y me dirijo a todos ustedes.

Canada has always been steadfast in their support. You’ve been a reliable partner to Ukraine and Ukrainians, and I am sure this will continue. You’ve offered your help, your assistance at our earliest request. You supply us with the military assistance, with humanitarian assistance, you imposed serious sanctions.

Canadá siempre ha sido firme en su apoyo. Habéis sido un socio fiable para Ucrania y los ucranianos, y estoy seguro de que esto continuará. Habéis ofrecido vuestra ayuda, vuestra asistencia a nuestra más pronta petición. Ustedes nos suministran la ayuda militar, la ayuda humanitaria, nos imponen serias sanciones.

At the same time, we see unfortunately this did not bring an end to the war. You can see our cities like Kharkiv, Mariupol and many other cities are not protected, just like your cities are protected: Edmonton, Vancouver. You can see that Kyiv is being shelled and bombed. City of Ivano Frankivsk: it used to be a very peaceful country, peaceful cities but now they’re being constantly bombarded.

Al mismo tiempo, vemos que desgraciadamente esto no ha puesto fin a la guerra. Pueden ver que nuestras ciudades como Kharkiv, Mariupol y muchas otras ciudades no están protegidas, al igual que sus ciudades: Edmonton, Vancouver. Podéis ver que Kyiv está siendo bombardeada y atacada. La ciudad de Ivano Frankivsk: solía ser un país muy pacífico, ciudades pacíficas, pero ahora están siendo constantemente bombardeadas.

What I am trying to say is that we all need to do, you all need to do more to stop Russia, to protect Ukraine and by doing that, to protect Europe from Russian threat.

Lo que trato de decir es que todos tenemos que hacer, todos tienen que hacer más para detener a Rusia, para proteger a Ucrania y, al hacerlo, para proteger a Europa de la amenaza rusa.

They’re destroying everything: memorial complexes, schools, hospitals, housing complex.

Están destruyendo todo: complejos conmemorativos, escuelas, hospitales, complejos de viviendas.

They already killed 97 Ukrainian children.

Ya han matado a 97 niños ucranianos.

Bombs fall in the heart of Kyiv.

Las bombas caen en el corazón de Kyiv.

We’re not asking for much. We’re asking for justice, for real support which will help us to prevail, to defend, to save lives all over the world. Canada is leading in these efforts and I’m hoping that other countries will follow the same. So we are asking for more of your leadership and please take greater part in these efforts.

No pedimos mucho. Pedimos justicia, un apoyo real que nos ayude a prevalecer, a defender, a salvar vidas en todo el mundo. Canadá está liderando estos esfuerzos y espero que otros países sigan lo mismo. Así que les pedimos más liderazgo y que, por favor, participen más en estos esfuerzos.

Justin and all of our friends of Ukraine, all friends of the truth: please understand how important it is for us to close our airspace from Russian missiles and Russian aircrafts. I hope you can understand. 

Justin y todos nuestros amigos de Ucrania, todos los amigos de la verdad: por favor, comprended lo importante que es para nosotros cerrar nuestro espacio aéreo a los misiles rusos y a los aviones rusos. Espero que podáis entenderlo.

I hope you can increase your efforts. You can increase sanctions, so they will not have a single dollar to fund their war effort. Commercial entities should not be working in Russia.

Espero que podáis aumentar vuestros esfuerzos. Podéis aumentar las sanciones, para que no tengan ni un solo dólar para financiar su esfuerzo bélico. Las entidades comerciales no deberían trabajar en Rusia.

I believe you know better than many in any other countries that this attack on Ukraine is an attempt to annihilate Ukrainian people, and there is nothing else to it. This is their main objective. It’s actually a war against Ukrainian people. And it’s an attempt to destroy everything that we as Ukrainians do. It’s an attempt to destroy our future, to destroy our nation, our character.

Creo que ustedes saben mejor que muchos en otros países que este ataque a Ucrania es un intento de aniquilar al pueblo ucraniano, y no hay nada más. Este es su principal objetivo. En realidad es una guerra contra el pueblo ucraniano. Y es un intento de destruir todo lo que hacemos los ucranianos. Es un intento de destruir nuestro futuro, de destruir nuestra nación, nuestro carácter.

You Canadians, you know very well all this. That’s why I’m asking you please do not stop in your efforts.

Ustedes, los canadienses, saben muy bien todo esto. Por eso os pido que, por favor, no os detengáis en vuestros esfuerzos.

Please expand your efforts to bring back peace in our peaceful country. I believe and I know that you can do it. We are part of the anti-war coalition and jointly I am sure that we’ll achieve results.

Por favor, ampliad vuestros esfuerzos para devolver la paz a nuestro pacífico país. Creo y sé que podéis hacerlo. Formamos parte de la coalición contra la guerra y juntos estoy seguro de que conseguiremos resultados.

I would like to also ask our Ukrainian diaspora in Canada: this is a historical moment, and we need your support, your practical support.

También me gustaría pedir a nuestra diáspora ucraniana en Canadá: este es un momento histórico, y necesitamos vuestro apoyo, vuestro apoyo práctico.

We hope that with your practical steps you will show that you are part of the modern Ukrainian history.

Esperamos que con vuestros pasos prácticos demostréis que formáis parte de la historia moderna de Ucrania.

Please remember: this is practical, modern-day history of Ukraine. We want to live. We want to have peace.

Por favor, recuerden: esta es la historia práctica y moderna de Ucrania. Queremos vivir. Queremos tener paz.
