Communist Party Congress of Cuba at War with Social Media
Waging war on reality, harshly censoring social media and reiterating the regime’s goal to crush all dissenting views were some of the topics that characterized the 8th Communist Party Congress.
Alpidio Alonso, Minister of Culture (or Minister of Cultural Policing) asserted that he debates with everyone as long as they agree with the regime. Miguel Barnet ranted on social media and said everything posted there is “counterrevolutionary.”
Yailin Orta, Granma Editor said that she felt “ashamed” of being a communist when she uses social media. Overall, the participants considered social media and reality itself enemies of the revolution.
This video captures the essence of the the 8th Communist Party Congress. Repression was the order of the day. Judging by the manner in which internet access has been suspended for democracy leader José Daniel Ferrer Garcia, artist Tania Brugera, one might conclude that that the regime is investing heavily on technology to censor internet and prevent human rights activists from giving their accounts repression and gross human rights violations in Cuba.
