Expel Cuba from the UN Human Rights Council

John Suarez, Director of the Free Cuba Foundation, an NGO devoted to “promote a peaceful transition to a Cuba that respects human rights and political and economic freedoms” recently initiated a petition that aims to expel the Cuban regime from the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The initiative follows the recent expulsion of Russia for its responsibility in the invasion of Ukraine and the killing of countless civilians.

Cuba has been ruled by one of the world’s longest lasting dictatorships. Its regime keeps over 1,000 people in jail for exercising fundamental human rights and Freedom House in its 2022 report lists Cuba as the nation with the least amount of respect for civil and political liberties in Latin America.

It is therefore morally wrong, inadmissible and a way to undermine the UN Human Rights Council to allow dictatorships such as Cuba to be a member of such international body. It undermines its objectives and it only serve dictatorships to assist each other and avoid paying a political price for their brutality and repression.
