Cubans react to Russia's suspension from the UN Human Rights Council

Democratic Spaces considers shameful the position of dictatorships such as Cuba that voted against the suspension of Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. The Cuban regime has actively participated in the hybrid warfare by disseminating in Cuban official media the point of view of Vladimir Putin through Russian state television and news sources. Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International Canada have irrefutable evidence proving Russia’s targeting of civilians and war crimes from the outset of the invasion of Ukraine. More recently images of mass murders in Bucha, Ukraine are testimonies to the atrocities and war crimes perpetrated by the Russian regime.

The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday suspended Russia from the body's Human Rights Council in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.

Of the assembly's 193 members, 93 voted in favor, 24 against and 58 abstained, underscoring a weakening of international unity against Russia. It is the second suspension of a country from the council, after Libya in 2011.

The abstentions, condemned by Kiev, were not taken into account because a favorable vote of two thirds of the countries speaking in favor or against is sufficient for a suspension.

Among the countries that voted against it was China, which considers it a "hasty initiative" that "adds fuel to the fire" and a "dangerous precedent". Iran, Kazakhstan, Bolivia and Cuba also opposed it. Venezuela called to vote against but has lost its right to vote due to the accumulation of outstanding payments.

As expected, Russia, Belarus and Syria opposed the resolution.

Raidel Arbelay Becerra, a Cuban baseball player who has lived in Ukraine for decades commented on the Cuban dictatorship’s position to vote against the suspension of Russia from the UN Human Rights Council. He said

Actually reading this makes me want to cry.

How is it possible that there are countries that support this war criminal?

How is it possible that the Cuban government supports Russia?

My God, I have no words to express how one can be so barbaric in this situation!!!!

They really don't know what they are doing....

Expect a new special period. Russia is already in an economic collapse and 100% is not going to keep "giving the tit" to Cuba.

Although well, it's always the "Yankee economic blockade" to blame.
